FAQ - Frequently asked questions

YES and NO. Photos in RAW quality can be downloaded only in action week which will not be repeated again. Photos in JPG quality can be downloaded everytime. You can sign up for subscription and you won't miss any new photo!

2. Can I use photos from this web for private or commercial purposes?

YES. All photos on RawPhotoForFree.com are free for personal and commercial purposes but you cannot redistribute these pictures and you cannot claim the photos as your own ones.

3. Is it my duty to publish the author's name?

NO. We don't require to post the author's name, but we will be glad if you do it.

4. How often do we publish new photos?

EVERY WEEK on Sunday, exactly at 23:30 CEST.

5. What is a RAW photo?

It is the image file that contains minimally processed data from the image sensor of either digital camera (or film scanner, image scanner). You can imagine it as an unvarnished negative. There exist lots of formats (.dng, .CR2, .NEF, .ORF, etc.).

6. What is the RAW format good for?

As the raw format contains much more data that can be used very well in post-production of photography, you can better process underexposed and overexposed places in photo without greater loss in quality or for example with better colour tuning options.

7. What is better RAW or JPEG?

While in RAW format only one colour channel is assigned for each pixel, in JPEG format each pixel has complete colour information. It means that RAW format gives you much better postproduction options. The disadvantage of RAW is much larger data file. When you shoot in JPEG format, image is compressed and some information is lost and non-recoverable. That’s the reason why most photographers prefer capturing RAW images and editing them later. If you mean it seriously with taking photos, use definitely RAW.

8. How do I open and edit RAW format?

You can use many freely available graphic editors (for example): Darktable, DigiKam, IrfanView, Photivo, Raw Therapee, Stepok´s RAW Importer
